Hilton
Lakes (2-3 hrs.)
Easy
access provides first-time or early season travelers
with ideal campsites at Davis or Hilton
lakes #2 and #3. Good fishing for
rainbow and eastern brook. Upper lakes offer Golden
trout. Terrain varies from heavily forested to
glacial. Excellent hiking.
McGee
Canyon
Noted
for being one of the most colorful in the state,
McGee Canyon will introduce you to breathtaking
geological color and formation, as well as brilliant
flora, at every turn. Round Lake (2 hrs.) is
perfect for families. Kids will enjoy swimming
in the warm lake, exploring meadows, and first-time
fishing in the lakes or close-by McGee creek.
Campsites on the lake or stream also offer central
locality to most any other lake or point of interest
in the canyon. Big McGee Lake (3 hrs.)
situated in a high glacial moraine, is surrounded by
exquisite meadows, peaks and waterfalls.
Fishing, hiking boating or mountain climbing will
highlight your stay here. Grass and Steelhead
Lakes (2-3 hrs.) nestled in a quiet side canyon,
these lakes offer fishing for rainbow, golden, and
Eastern brook, seclusion and hiking to nearby Meadow,
Gold, or Crocker Lakes.
Traveling to any of these lakes you will have
stunning panoramas of the entire canyon. Steelhead
Lake is very possibly the most beautiful lake you
will ever see.
Baldwin
Canyon (2-3 hrs.)
Rich
in history and geology, this canyon will show you
untraveled wilderness. The 11,000 ft. lake was once
the site of an early tungsten mine. If you are
seeking quiet seclusion, spectacular photography or
endless hiking with virtually no visitors, Baldwin
is for you.
Upper
Fish Creek (6 hrs.)
Most
campsites are located on this aptly named stream,
providing central access to lakes of the basin. Fish
Creek, is without a doubt, the finest fishing
you will find in the sierra wilderness. From the
head-waters, down to Horse Heaven, Tully Hole, and
Cascade Valley you will find some of the best and
most entertaining fly-fishing anywhere. Izzak
Walton Lake, home of the Wily Golden Trout, is
one of the few remaining lakes with pure Goldens.
You can also hike to the Cotton Lakes, to
find more Goldens. Hortense Lake offers the
largest Eastern Brook to be found in the John Muir
Wilderness. Lee and Cecil Lakes at the
foot of spectacular Red State Mtn. offer fine
Rainbows as well as Red and White Lake. Tully
Lake, an easy hike, is perfect for a leisurely
afternoon or some Rainbow-Golden Hybrid fishing.
Convict
Basin
We
cross Laurel Pass (11,000) with views of phenomenal
Convict Canyon. Heading down we see Genevieve
Lake with excellent Eastern Brook fishing, the
trail passing Lake Edith and just above is Cloverleaf
Lake. Both offer fishing for Golden Trout. The
hiking is fabulous with the opportunity to cross-
country to the Ram Lakes Basin. The stream
that connects these 3 lakes provides excellent
fishing, day hiking, wildlife observations and photo
opportunities. Continuing on the main trail we
come to Dorothy Lake which plunges to depths
of up to 290' and provides fishing for Brown, Brook,
and Rainbow. A base camp at Dorothy gives access to Bighorn,
Wit-so-nah-pah, and Constance.
Downstream of Dorothy is Mildred, and the
trail to Bright Dot, a spectacular route over
huge expanses of red rock and granite.
